Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Septic Arthritis in Horses

This seminar discusses advances in the diagnosis and treatment of septic arthritis in horses. Specifically, new synovial fluid culture techniques and biomarkers are covered, as well as new imaging techniques for detection of infection. For the treatment of septic arthritis, advances in surgical techniques and regional limb perfusion techniques are covered, as well as novel anti-biofilm therapeutics, including platelet lysate and stem cells with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe new ways to quickly and accurately diagnosis septic arthritis and hopefully identify the causative bacterial agent.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to put into practice the most up to date surgical techniques and regional limb perfusion techniques to effectively treat septic arthritis.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe novel therapies for the treatment of septic arthritis that have potent anti-biofilm properties and can be synergistic with traditional antimicrobial therapies.
