This presentation will lay the foundation for the Seminar Series on “Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Septic Arthritis in Horses” by discussing the challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of synovial sepsis due to biofilm formation. Mechanism of biofilm formation in synovial sepsis will be reviewed, and new microbiology laboratory techniques will be explained to culture and identify isolates. New biofilm biomarkers such as D-Dimers will also be discussed.
