After initial veterinary training at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Allen pursued a PhD at Cambridge, followed by post-doctoral training in. comparative orthopedics at Purdue University. This research training provided expertise in the development and optimization of preclinical animal models for orthopedic conditions. After moving to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, Dr. Allen held joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Neuroscience & Physiology, and Laboratory Animal Resources. In 12 years at Syracuse, he mentored a number of graduate students and orthopedic residents pursuing thesis research. Dr. Allen joined The Ohio State University (OSU) in March 2008 and directed the Surgical Research Laboratory at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. At OSU, he served as the research mentor for two PhD students, nine veterinary surgical residents, and six surgical Fellows. He also helped to establish a clinical total knee replacement program in the Veterinary Medical Centre. In 2014, Dr. Allen was elected Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Cambridge. His clinical research interests include total knee replacement, surgical navigation and robotics. Since 2022, Dr. Allen has served as the Scientific Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer for a biotech start-up company that is working to develop RNA therapeutics for the management of musculoskeletal diseases in humans and companion animals.
